President's Shack
The Kiwanis Walk-a-thon was today, and there were just enough of us to support it. There were
approximately 200 walkers (counts varied widely, as usual), but the SARC was only asked to provide
a “rough count”. There was no drama this year, perhaps owing to the new route, but when you’re
providing emergency communications, that’s a good thing. Thanks to Jim KI6PTA, Julie KI6YRA,
Dave KJ6VRV, Sandy KJ6VRW, and Bill WA6QYR, for being on hand to help keep track of the
participants.
A few folks had radio issues before (including the night before) and during the walk-a-thon, and that
got me to thinking about “secondary” reasons for participating in community-support events – we
have an excuse to make sure our stuff works, and that we’ll know how to use it when a real
emergency arises! A defective radio or user during a public service event can be somewhat
disruptive, but it is rarely critical, and we can usually get stuff ironed out pretty quickly and easily. If
the same problems occur during an emergency, though, you may find yourself up the proverbial
creek without a paddle (or boat). Sure, it’s easy to fire up the ol’ rig and talk to people on our local
repeaters in your rig’s memory, but how often do you practice using some of the other settings such
as soft DTMF keys, changing squelch tones, cross-band repeat, etc? What if the feature you want is
buried in a menu somewhere? Can you find it if your “nifty” guide isn’t handy? Honestly, I’m just as
guilty as other folks, but it’s still good food for thought.
We still only have about 5 people signed up to do the JOTA event, but we really need at least 3 or 4
more to do a good job: 2 to supervise the snap-together radio kit building for the young ‘uns, 2 for the
fox hunt, 3 for the soldering (more is better think safety!), and 1 for the GOTA station. Note that the
numbers above are MINIMUMS! Last year, Ed KI6PSP and his assistant, Ammon, could have used
someone to spell them, and Dave AD7GU ran the GOTA all by his lonesome. Even if you can only
spend an hour, it’d be a big help!
The next meeting will be held on October 10

Minutes from SARC Sep 2012 meeting
President Harry, K6HLS called the meeting to order at 7:30 pm. Treasurer Julie, KI6YRA reported a
balance of $5871 in the bank. Roy Mayhugh, KG6SFT was our member but first meeting visitor.
Harry needs to talk with repeater chairman Ed, KI6PSP about the portable repeater mast and the
possibility of putting the 147 machine on emergency power. The 147.00 repeater has battery back up
but the batteries are dead and there are solar panels to keep the batteries charged if the club wishes
to continue efforts in that direction. The only problem is the controlling computer operating off ac
power.
Linda, KF6CMW of the Public Relations committee reported going to the lightly attended summer
Emergency Services meetings where CERT people talked about issues with home emergency
supplies for 2 or more days being available in each household.
Hal, N6HAL talked about getting Ridgecrest RACES going again along with Mike Cash, N6PM, the
eastern Kern County radio officer.
